Overview -> Hardware Initiation -> RAM (Random Access Memory)
- Definition: RAM works the way
your short term memory works. This means that you store
things/information there for a temporary basis. RAM is used because
it is much faster than any other form of storage because it is tight
integration with the systemboard and processor.
- The more RAM you have, the better.
- The older RAM gets, the more
expensive
it is, as well as the newer RAM is. Normally, the most common RAM
and least expensive is at least one or two generations behind the top
of the line RAM.
- RAM is probably
the most
common hardware failure and the easiest to install and upgrade.
- Generally Encountered Problem
s with
RAM:
- Bad
or unseated RAM - common
symptoms of this are your system not turning on or not turning on and
making irregular beeping sounds.
- Sporadic
or Inconsistent Error
Messages: This is normally due to corrupted RAM. RAM
normally
comes in modular sticks. Usually the problem is in one of these
sticks only. There are several programs to test RAM one is
included on most all Linux install/live CDs.
