Overview -> Hardware Initiation -> Power Supply
-
Power is generated through a
standard
power cord on desktops mostly, for other laptops and mobile devices
it would be through specialized cords.
-
Desktops:
Internal power supply
with a cooling fan which vary in wattage. The amount of wattage
determines the amount of parts that the power supply can sustain at one
time.
Laptops: Power
supply is
run through an AC adapter which is usually the small box on the power
cord. This adapter is specialized for your laptop to operate with
the appropriate amount of power to control the components/parts
already in your laptop.
-
Generally Encountered
Problems with
Power:
-
Not enough power.
-
Overheating power supply
-
Dying or weak power supply
-
Electrical
surges – many different
causes, among them being power shortages within the home, turning on
or off the computer without shutting down properly. Best ways to
prevent this are to at least have a surge protector (a multiple
outlet power source that contains its own fuse which prevents the
computer from absorbing too much electricity,) a battery back up
power regulator ( This is basically an advanced surge protector with
a backup battery supply. This controls the voltage going into your
computer and if power is cut it will sustain power for a short period
of time on battery. Laptops normally have this feature built in.) Note: It is almost impossible to protect
electronics from a direct or even close proximity lightning strikes;
short of completely unplugging the device from the power source before
lightning strikes.
